Jimmy Stewart - A Dog Named Beau

Via Mark at Hyperliterature.com

Jimmy Stewart reading his poem on Carson. As Mark said, "If you don't need a tissue by the end of this, then you have no heart."

After all I seem to have a heart, which this poem struck like a dart. One of the best I heard ever, only irked I could write so well never.

I remember watching this when it first aired. My mom was crying her eyes out, and I remember being floored at the way he brought the house down. It was entirely unexpected. Jimmy Stewart was the man.

I think the reason it's so effective, is that Jimmy's undulating voice seems rather innocent, or childlike, despite his age. By the time he's got you at the end, you've already fallen in love with both his family and the dog, and the stark way he tells you that dog is dead is made even more powerful by his innocence.

Nice poem Lasse!

Chris - yeah, Jimmy Stewart is my all time fave. This was my first time seeing it - watched it 4 times in the past day, and now I'm afraid of watching it again 'cause I know it makes me cry every time.

Mark,- yeah, I wish I had written to Jimmy Stewart while he was still alive; I always wanted to, but felt too shy. I held my "Dog Named Boo" very tight last night. He didn't mind at all, since he loves spooning.

I did the same thing. When I was watching it, Ellie and I were laying on the couch together. She was snoring softly, and I think my crying irritated her.

Wilbur and Ariel get really worried when mommy cries, but I've taught them "It's okay, it's only a movie" and then they go, "oh I see, it's alright, mommy's not really sad for real."

Oh, that was sad and moving. Especially the way he told his poem.
